YMCA Friend of the Month
Congratulations Sebastian Morse for being nominated for the Kidstop Friend of the Month for February! Sebastian is 7 and in the second grade and was chosen by the other kids in our program for his responsibility! He loves to play games and is always willing to be a team player. He loves to eat pizza and watch the movie “Fast and Furious 6”. Although he “hates” fish, he would like to go to the Atlantic to see penguins. Sebastian loves to go outside to play and would like to see his favorite animal…the cheetah! Congratulations Sebastian! Keep up the good work.
On to State for 5 Edgemont AAU Wrestlers!
On Saturday, March 15th, the Edgemont AAU wrestlers traveled to Sturgis to compete at the Regional AAU tournament. The top eight wrestlers form each District had to qualify to compete at Regions. From Regions, the top three placers in each bracket advance to the State Tournament.
In the 7-8 division, first time qualifier James O’Neill lost two matches and was eliminated, but gained some Regional wrestling experience.
In the 9-10 division, Mason Cortney started out strong and won two matches then lost a couple of tough matches and finished strong in 5th place. Keaton Darrow lost a couple of matches and then was eliminated. Hunter Hollenbeck had a bye and lost a match, however he placed third to qualify him for his first State tournament. Cade Grill won by forfeit, a decision and a pin. Then, he ended up losing a close match in the finals to place 2nd and qualify him for his third State tournament.
In the 11-12 division, Jestyn Woodward started out winning his first match, lost his next match forcing him to wrestle a couple more to get into the third and fourth place match still fighting for a State qualification. He ended up losing this match and placed 4th. Grant Darrow had a strong start with a win, lost two matches in a row and was eliminated. Caleb Simons wrestled strong all day. He had a first round pin, lost a well fought second round match, then came back with another pin but dropped his fourth round match and was eliminated. Kolton Darrow had a technical fall in his first match, then lost in the second round, won by forfeit in the third and dropped the last match of the day to finish in fourth place. Because of reduced number of kids in his weight bracket, Kolton was still able to qualify for his fifth State tournament.
In the 13-14 division, Jaret Woodward had a bye in the first round, but when it was time to wrestle he came out with a strong second round pin. He lost his final match of the day to place second and qualify him for his second State tournament as a Mogul. Chance Grill pinned his first opponent, lost in the second round, had a pin in the third round and an 11-0 decision to place third and qualify him for his seventh State tournament. Brennen Hanes had a pin in the first round, had an extremely good showing in the second match but still suffered a tough loss and went on to wrestle well again, but dropped his second match in a row and placed 6th.
These wrestlers have worked harder than you could imagine all season and whether they qualified for State or not, they showed remarkable improvement in their ability. The Edgemont community should be extremely proud of their representation of our AAU wrestlers. The State AAU Tournament will be held March 29th and 30th in Rapid City at the Ice Hockey Arena in the Civic Center.
