January BBall Recap

by Coach Turner
The team is still looking to notch its first victory of the season; however there has been much improvement to their style of play and the boys continue to work hard in practice and during games. Here’s a recap: Coming back from our winter break, the boys hosted the Sioux County Warriors on January 10. We played the Warriors well, but fell a little short and lost 22-33. The Moguls were led by Matt Peter’s double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, but our 29 turnovers did not help our cause that evening. Next was the West River Basketball Tournament. In the first round, we had a rematch with the Wall Eagles. Edgemont had already played Wall in their 2nd game of the season, with Wall winning 60-30. However, on this night the Moguls played the Eagles a lot tougher and cut down on their mistakes from the first match-up but still came up short, losing 18-37. The boys were led by Mason Ostenson’s 6 points and 7 rebounds. Next up for the Moguls were the Hot Springs Bison. This game was a very close game in the first half, with Hot Springs clinging to a one point lead at half. The second half though was a different story. During the 3rd quarter, the Bison couldn’t miss and our Moguls couldn’t find their shot. Hot Springs pulled away and won 79-40. The boys were led by Matt Peters’ 16 points and Treg Schaack’s 5 rebounds. This loss moved the Moguls to the 7th place game against Upton, WY Bobcats. Playing in their 3rd game in 3 nights, the Moguls started slowly, but gained some momentum in the second quarter and continued to play Upton tough throughout the whole game and finally got into a bit of an offensive rhythm. Upton pulled out the victory with a score of 49-36. The team was led by Treg Schaack’s 13 points and Matt Peter’s 4 rebounds. The road weary Moguls took to the road yet again and traveled to Harrison, NE for the Panhandle Conference Tournament against Hay Springs, NE. This game too was a very close game, with the Moguls taking a one-point lead at half against the Hawks. Yet, the second half proved detrimental to the Moguls as our zone defense did not play as aggressively as they did in the first half. The final score was Hay Springs 48 – Edgemont 40. The Moguls were led by Matt Peters’ double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds in the losing effort. The following week, The Moguls had to travel to Nebraska again to face the Crawford, Rams. As in the two previous games, the Moguls played with and held the game close against the Rams, but the Rams inside Post play proved too difficult as we kept putting their best free throw shooter on the line and he made his trips count. Crawford pulled away late and won 54 – 42. Against the Rams the Moguls were led by Matt Peters scoring with 18 points and Mason Ostenson’s 10 rebounds.
Finally, the Moguls were able to host a weekend of games against New Underwood and Hemingford, NE. Against New Underwood, an opponent the Moguls played in the first game of the season, the Moguls played remarkably better the second time around against the Tigers. The Tigers bench would prove too deep against the Moguls, and New Underwood won 59 – 31. Our boys were led by both Matt Peters and Treg Schaack’s 10 points each and Mason Ostenson’s 9 rebounds. On Saturday, the Moguls faced the best all-round, top-to-bottom team we have seen all year. Hemingford’s tempo and quickness kept the Moguls in foul trouble all night. However, the boys kept playing and working the ball around on the offensive end and trying to control tempo and ball possession. Hemingford continued their ball pressure and press even though the game was well in hand, final score Hemingford 84 – Edgemont 27. Against HHS, Moguls were led by Treg and Matt’s 6 points each and Treg’s 4 rebounds. Through the month of January the Moguls have had their share of learning curves, but these boys continue to hustle and play ball. They are making huge strides in their improvement and understanding of what is takes to play a full 4 quarters of basketball and be successful. As we come into the last month of the season, we hope to be competitive and pick up a few victories. The team will have one more game before press-time against Rapid City Christian Comets on Tuesday, January 31st.
The way the team has responded this season, our community should be proud of them.

Come out to support them on Parent’s Night this Saturday, February 4th against Hay Springs, NE at 2:00pm. Don your Orange and Black See you in the stands!
