<title>Custer Fall River board tours new landfill area </title>

<description>&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; The board members of the Custer Fall River Regional Waste Management District met last Thursday in Edgemont at City Hall, and then toured the new landfill area.&amp;nbsp; The tour included reviewing the new metal building (you may have noticed it o&amp;shy;n the horizon southeast of town), Cell o&amp;shy;ne of the new landfill, and the net fencing o&amp;shy;n the south perimeter to catch litter.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; The new license for the landfill will allow up to 12,000 tons of garbage to be buried there the first year, increasing to 20,000 tons by year five.&amp;nbsp; In addition, the area will serve as temporary storage for rubble including tires, white goods, and scrap metal for recycling.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; The board consists of an appointed person from each of the nine city and county entities in the two counties.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; The area of the old landfill has been completely restored to its previous contour and has been re-seeded. Chuck Catlett, board member from the City of Hot Springs, suggested that an improved road will need to be built to the rubble unloading area and that the current road to the new landfill site will eventually need to be extended so that large trucks can turn around at the unloading area.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; The board’s next meeting will be 7 pm July 10th in Hot Springs.</description>

<description>&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; o&amp;shy;n Thursday May 8th four of the five candidates for the two available seats representing District 30 in the House of Representatives came to Edgemont.&amp;nbsp; They were here attending a “Meet the Candidate” forum which allowed area residents to ask specific questions of the group. Each candidate had the opportunity to respond to questions.&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; Eighteen people attended the meeting and asked candidates questions ranging from their positions o&amp;shy;n property, income and sales tax and whether they were in favor of raising them to branding issues o&amp;shy;n cattle and other ranch livestock.&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; o&amp;shy;ne question “ If elected what would your first priority be and why” lead to discussions o&amp;shy;n education, consolidation and the funding of schools. Dick Brown, Mike Verchio and Don Young viewed education as their top priorities. Lance Russell said his top priority would be more state help for rural South Dakota&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; At this time there are two more candidate forums scheduled&amp;nbsp; before the primary election o&amp;shy;n June 3rd. There will be o&amp;shy;ne in Oelrichs this coming Friday evening at 5 pm. o&amp;shy;n May 29th the Herald Tribune will sponsor a forum in Edgemont beginning at 7pm at the St.James Parish Center. Candidates will be representing the County Commissioner’s race, South Dakota House and Senate races. The candidates for US Senate seats have also been invited .</description>

<title>Welcome moisture received</title>

<description>by Anne Cassens&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Last week rain, and then a really fast spring snowstorm brought much needed moisture to the Edgemont area.&amp;nbsp; Wednesday evening it started raining and continued through most of the night, with 1.35” received by Thursday morning at 7 a.m.&amp;nbsp; Thursday a tenth of an inch of snow was recorded with nearly a tenth of an inch of moisture, as the snow melted falling o&amp;shy;n warm ground.&amp;nbsp; Friday morning about 6 a.m. heavier snow began falling and in about six hours we official total in Edgemont was 6”.&amp;nbsp; Although traffic and businesses throughout western South Dakota were halted during the fast moving, heavy snowstorm, area ranchers were thrilled to receive the moisture.&amp;nbsp; Some areas received more snow (as much as two feet in Spearfish) and wind caused drifting of snow in some areas.&amp;nbsp; By Sunday morning, hardly a trace of snow was left as temperatures were into the mid 50’s late Saturday afternoon.</description>

<description>Trailhead Cafe will close after Mother’s Day Buffet&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; An auction was held in Edgemont last Tuesday,&amp;#8200;April 29th, offering the Trailhead Cafe business, building, and land for sale as well as a home at 904 Third Ave.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Bids were held by auctioneer (United Country Black Hills Real Estate, of Sturgis, SD) for an additional 24 hours after the sale, but ultimately rejected by the seller.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Diane Browder has owned the business since November of 2004 and has been the manager of the business since that time.&amp;nbsp; Browder states, “It is time to move o&amp;shy;n with my life and I&amp;#8200;had hoped to sell the business to someone who would continue its operation, but that just didn’t happen.”&amp;nbsp; The business re-opened o&amp;shy;n Friday May 2nd and will have hours of 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily through May 11th (Mother’s Day) and then will be closing.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Fresh Start remodeling nearly complete&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; The remodeling project at Fresh Start is now nearly finished.&amp;nbsp; This includes a new cafe area&amp;nbsp; with fresh decor including newly upholstered booths.&amp;nbsp; There is also expanded retail space with an assortment of South Dakota Made items and a new centrally located checkout.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; There is new wood-look flooring, and a pool table in the bar/casino area.&amp;nbsp; The retail area also includes expanded liquor selection and great wine selection; added Pepsi fountain in addition to Coke, new coffee varieties, chili &amp; nacho station, and o&amp;shy;ngoing grocery specials which currently include milk, eggs, and bread at discount prices.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Dragon’s Lair in new location&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Brian and Stacey Eckhoff have relocated their business, Dragon’s Lair, to the previous location next to the swimming pool.&amp;nbsp; The business has been located most recently o&amp;shy;n main street&amp;#8200;(Second Ave) during the winter months.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; In addition to video rental, the Lair offers photography and will soon be expanding to include a game room for the youth.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Line dancing offered&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Two Edgemont women, Susan McCawley and Arlie Schumacher, have begun Line Dancing classes at the St. James Parish Center o&amp;shy;n&amp;nbsp; second and fourth Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m.&amp;nbsp; The dancing lessons are free and open to anyone interested.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Remember When now open for&amp;nbsp;breakfast&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Remember When has changed their hours of operation and are now open for breakfast.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; They are offering a large selection of breakfast items which will be served from 6 am till 10 am.&amp;nbsp; Lunch and dinner are still served weekdays until 7 pm. Saturday hours are 6 am til 4pm and Sunday from 6 am till 2 pm.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; PJ’s now Conoco&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; PJ’s has recently changed from a BP station to a Conoco gas and desiel station. The change came about because BP has left the state of South Dakota. More o&amp;shy;n their changes in an upcoming “Focus o&amp;shy;n Business”.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Purple Bench Greenhouse open&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; The Purple Bench Greenhouse has opened for the 2008 planting season.&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; The greenhouse, owned by Marlous Stevens who is assisted by son&amp;nbsp; Bob “the boss”, offer perennials, annuals, vegetables, herbs, trees and shrubs. They also have a nice selection o&amp;shy;n already potted planters.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Hours are from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm Monday-Friday and Saturday 8:00 am till 4:00 pm.</description>

<description>&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Our neighbor Hot Springs holds its city and school elections in conjunction with the primary elections o&amp;shy;n June 3.&amp;nbsp; In Hot Springs, Don DeVries and Harry Burdette will be vying for the Mayor’s seat with incumbent Carl Oberlitner choosing not to seek re-election.&amp;nbsp; There are also two council positions open.&amp;nbsp; In Ward III, Carolann Schwarzenbach and Georgia Pomrenke are running for the position vacated by Don DeVries.&amp;nbsp; Schwarzenbach has served in this position in the past.&amp;nbsp; In Ward I, incumbent Charles Easterby is being challenged by Brian Crawford and Craig Romey.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; In the Republican Primary, county commissioner candidates include incumbent Mike Ortner, Bill White, Bill Clark, Joe Allen, Paul Nabholz,Norm Pudwill, Jose Trinidad, and Yogi Weiss.&amp;nbsp; These men will vie for three positions to advance to the general election.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Also in the Republican Primary, previous SD&amp;#8200;Representatives Gordon Pederson and Gordon Howie will be seeking the SD Senate seat vacated by Jim Lintz.&amp;nbsp; In the House race, Lance Russell, Don Young, Mike Verchio, Galen Niederwerder, and Dick Brown are seeking the two positions.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Independent Party candidates have until the date of the Primary Election to file for candidacy, so we may be seeing more candidates coming into the races for the general election.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; You may see your Primary Ballot o&amp;shy;nline by visiting www.sdsos.gov, then click o&amp;shy;n Elections &amp;&amp;#8200;Voter Registration, then Voter Information Portal, then enter your name and date of birth.&amp;nbsp; It will tell you your precinct, your voting location, and show a “View Ballot” box which you can click to view your primary ballot.&amp;nbsp; Or wait a few weeks and the newspapers will be printing the sample ballots.</description>

<description>&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Barbara Bear is this month’s Senior Citizen Volunteer of the Month.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Barbara is fairly new to the community--altho’ like some others, she lived here years ago, so has come “home” to Edgemont (in January of 2008).&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; In describing Barbara, her friends at the Center say she has a cool pickup and a Min Pin dog, and she walks alot.&amp;nbsp; She also is the cook’s helper o­n Friday and delivers meals when needed.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Barb says “I love to visit with the ladies here, and I’m glad to be able to help out my “family”.&amp;nbsp; Barb has an unusual family: they include Jo Spencer, her ex-mother in law and others.&amp;nbsp; Barb was married to Lynn Potter--she even gave him a kidney!&amp;nbsp; So “we figure that makes me a blood relative” she says with a smile.</description>

<description>&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Anne Cassens of Edgemont has announced her candidacy for Fall River County Commissioner.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; County residents last year voted to increase the number of county commissioners from three to five.&amp;nbsp; In conjunction with the completion of Commissioner Mike Ortner’s term, that leaves three openings o&amp;shy;n the Commissioner to be filled in 2008.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Cassens is currently a wife, mother, owner and editor of the Edgemont Herald Tribune, and is also involved in the family’s ranching and other businesses.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; “I’m used to wearing a lot of hats,” states Cassens.&amp;nbsp; “Some I&amp;#8200;have chosen and some I&amp;#8200;have kind of inherited.”&amp;nbsp; </description>

<title>Thune visits County Republican dinner</title>

<description> &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;County Republicans were combined with a busload of Custer County Republicans to hold their largest ever annual Lincoln Day Dinner last Friday evening at the American Legion in Hot Springs.&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;Every other year the Fall River Republicans present two special awards to their members.&amp;nbsp; The first is the Hauling Water to the Elephant Award which this year was presented to a very surprised Starla Russell.&amp;nbsp; The Hauling Water Award is for hard work “on the sidelines” for the party.&amp;nbsp; The Abe Lincoln Award was presented to Carolyn Schnose.&amp;nbsp; The Lincoln Award is in recognition of party leadership.&amp;nbsp; Schnose is the president of the Republican Woman’s Organization and also was interim president of the county Republicans last year when County President Lance Russell stepped down from that position in order to run for judge.</description>

<title>Fourth Annual Spelling Bee for Senior Citizens:&amp;#8200;</title>

<description>Individual winners in the Fourth Annual Senior Citizens Spelling Bee were from left:&amp;#8200;Betty Patrick (4th), Gloria Bennett (3rd), Barbara Bear (2nd) and Jess Cloyd (1st).&amp;nbsp; Twenty people participated with the Antiques Team winning the most points.&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; The Fourth Annual Senior Spelling Bee was held Friday night March 28th at the Senior Citizens.&amp;nbsp; The Bee, sponsored by the Edgemont Herald Tribune, again featured the Fossils team captained by Jane Coates and the Antiques team, captained by Beryl Eberle.&amp;nbsp; The Antiques team had two previous wins and the Fossils had o&amp;shy;ne previous win, so the audience tried hard to cheer o&amp;shy;n the Fossils to a second championship, but alas, the Antiques returned for their third win in four years, with a team score of 81, to the Fossils team score of 74.&amp;nbsp; Participants are allowed two wrong spellings before being dismissed from the competition.&amp;nbsp; Some of the words that ended participants tenure o&amp;shy;n the teams were:&amp;#8200;unscrupulously, tortoise, unaccompanied, urchin, wan, vaccinate, &amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; In addition to team prizes and individual prizes, all shared in cookies, coffee, and a lot of laughs.&amp;nbsp; Won’t you join us next year?</description>
