    Edgemont High School graduation will be held next Sunday, May 18th at 2 p.m. with the Baccalaureate at 1 p.m.  Both will be held in the Armory Building gym. 
    Speakers will include Valedictorian Sam Corbett and Salutatorian Alex Custer as well as Keynote speaker Ken Barker, Jr., an attorney from Belle Fourche, and the uncle of graduate, Josh Barker.

  

  

    The board members of the Custer Fall River Regional Waste Management District met last Thursday in Edgemont at City Hall, and then toured the new landfill area.  The tour included reviewing the new metal building (you may have noticed it o­n the horizon southeast of town), Cell o­ne of the new landfill, and the net fencing o­n the south perimeter to catch litter.
    The new license for the landfill will allow up to 12,000 tons of garbage to be buried there the first year, increasing to 20,000 tons by year five.  In addition, the area will serve as temporary storage for rubble including tires, white goods, and scrap metal for recycling.
    The board consists of an appointed person from each of the nine city and county entities in the two counties.
    The area of the old landfill has been completely restored to its previous contour and has been re-seeded. Chuck Catlett, board member from the City of Hot Springs, suggested that an improved road will need to be built to the rubble unloading area and that the current road to the new landfill site will eventually need to be extended so that large trucks can turn around at the unloading area.
    The board’s next meeting will be 7 pm July 10th in Hot Springs.

  

  

    o­n Thursday May 8th four of the five candidates for the two available seats representing District 30 in the House of Representatives came to Edgemont.  They were here attending a “Meet the Candidate” forum which allowed area residents to ask specific questions of the group. Each candidate had the opportunity to
respond to questions. 
    Eighteen people attended the meeting and asked candidates questions ranging from their positions o­n property, income and sales tax and whether they were in favor of raising them to branding issues o­n cattle and other ranch livestock.
    o­ne question “ If elected what would your first priority be and why” lead to discussions o­n education, consolidation and the funding of schools. Dick Brown, Mike Verchio and Don Young viewed education as their top priorities. Lance Russell said his top priority would be more state help for rural South Dakota
    At this time there are two more candidate forums scheduled  before the primary election o­n June 3rd. There will be o­ne in Oelrichs this coming Friday evening at 5 pm. o­n May 29th the Herald Tribune will sponsor a forum in Edgemont beginning at 7pm at the St.James Parish Center. Candidates will be representing the County Commissioner’s race, South Dakota House and Senate races. The candidates for US Senate seats have also been invited .

    Last week rain, and then a really fast spring snowstorm brought much needed moisture to the Edgemont area.  Wednesday evening it started raining and continued through most of the night, with 1.35” received by Thursday morning at 7 a.m.  Thursday a tenth of an inch of snow was recorded with nearly a tenth of an inch of moisture, as the snow melted falling o­n warm ground.  Friday morning about 6 a.m. heavier snow began falling and in about six hours we official total in Edgemont was 6”.  Although traffic and businesses throughout western South Dakota were halted during the fast moving, heavy snowstorm, area ranchers were thrilled to receive the moisture.  Some areas received more snow (as much as two feet in Spearfish) and wind caused drifting of snow in some areas.  By Sunday morning, hardly a trace of snow was left as temperatures were into the mid 50’s late Saturday afternoon.

  

    They are offering a large selection of breakfast items which will be served from 6 am till 10 am.  Lunch and dinner are still served weekdays until 7 pm. Saturday hours are 6 am til 4pm and Sunday from 6 am till 2 pm.

  

  

  

  

     Edgemont Regional Medical Clinic will change its days of operation to Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, beginning Mon., May 5. The clinic will no longer be open o­n Fridays. Clinic hours remain 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

    A wedding is planned for 4 p.m., June 21, 2008 at the Embassy Suites SE in Denver, CO. for Mindy Wilson and Eric Whittlesey of Aurora, CO.
    Mindy is a 1998 graduate of Edgemont High School and a 2002 graduate of Northern State U at Aberdeen, SD.  She is currently a sixth grade teacher at Byers Elementary in Byers, CO.  Mindy is the daughter of Sandy Hirz of Ft. Collins, CO and Walter Wilson of Sheridan, WY (formerly of Edgemont).
    The bridegroom elect is a graduate of Campbell Co. High School in Gillette, WY in 1998 and a 2002 graduate of Northern State U at Aberdeen, SD.  He works in  sales and management  for a Denver landscaping company.  Eric is the son of Rick & Peggy Whittlesey of Gillette, WY.

   SelectVAC®, o­ne of the industry’s branded preconditioning programs, recently enrolled its 3 millionth calf. A calf from John Putnam’s southwest South Dakota ranch received the unprecedented distinction.
    Putnam, a fourth generation cow/calf producer who works with his father, Lloyd, was eligible to win a year’s supply of SelectVAC products. He has been enrolling his calves in Pfizer Animal Health’s SelectVAC program for the last five years. “We’re starting to see a benefit in the price of these animals because of it,” he said.
In fact, a study showed that preconditioned calves can earn up to $29 more per head o­n sale day.  Additional demonstrated benefits of a preconditioning program include improved health and productivity.

  

  

Bill Clark, of Edgemont, A Republican, has also recently announced his candidacy for the Fall River County Commission.
   Bill has been a Fall River resident since 1977.  He and his wife Laura raised most of their family here.  They have four adult children, eleven grandchildren and five great grand children.
  Bill has been active in numerous and varied activities during the past thirty plus years.  He is well known for his vocal contributions to the community.

    Our neighbor Hot Springs holds its city and school elections in conjunction with the primary elections o­n June 3.  In Hot Springs, Don DeVries and Harry Burdette will be vying for the Mayor’s seat with incumbent Carl Oberlitner choosing not to seek re-election.  There are also two council positions open.  In Ward III, Carolann Schwarzenbach and Georgia Pomrenke are running for the position vacated by Don DeVries.  Schwarzenbach has served in this position in the past.  In Ward I, incumbent Charles Easterby is being challenged by Brian Crawford and Craig Romey.
    In the Republican Primary, county commissioner candidates include incumbent Mike Ortner, Bill White, Bill Clark, Joe Allen, Paul Nabholz,Norm Pudwill, Jose Trinidad, and Yogi Weiss.  These men will vie for three positions to advance to the general election.
    Also in the Republican Primary, previous SD Representatives Gordon Pederson and Gordon Howie will be seeking the SD Senate seat vacated by Jim Lintz.  In the House race, Lance Russell, Don Young, Mike Verchio, Galen Niederwerder, and Dick Brown are seeking the two positions.
    Independent Party candidates have until the date of the Primary Election to file for candidacy, so we may be seeing more candidates coming into the races for the general election.
    You may see your Primary Ballot o­nline by visiting www.sdsos.gov, then click o­n Elections & Voter Registration, then Voter Information Portal, then enter your name and date of birth.  It will tell you your precinct, your voting location, and show a “View Ballot” box which you can click to view your primary ballot.  Or wait a few weeks and the newspapers will be printing the sample ballots.

  

  

   Barbara Bear is this month’s Senior Citizen Volunteer of the Month.
    Barbara is fairly new to the community--altho’ like some others, she lived here years ago, so has come “home” to Edgemont (in January of 2008). 
    In describing Barbara, her friends at the Center say she has a cool pickup and a Min Pin dog, and she walks alot.  She also is the cook’s helper o­n Friday and delivers meals when needed.
    Barb says “I love to visit with the ladies here, and I’m glad to be able to help out my “family”.  Barb has an unusual family: they include Jo Spencer, her ex-mother in law and others.  Barb was married to Lynn Potter--she even gave him a kidney!  So “we figure that makes me a blood relative” she says with a smile.

   This Thursday and Friday the Edgemont High School Drama Club will present “Touchtone M for Murder”.  Local stars include from left: Sam Corbett, Bethany Evans, Laura Corbett, Nick Farrell, Chris Brown, Olivia Wing, Jayme Manke, Jake Hollenbeck, Ruth Trotter, Josie Thomsen, Eric Brown, Taner Fox, Liz Humiston, and Danny Cassens.  Not pictured: Ashley McCabe, Nina Nordstrand, Amanda Wood. This year’s high school play will be held at the sale barn Theatre due to the repair/remodeling of the armory.         Performances begin at 7 p.m. with a dessert bar served during intermission by the Junior Class. 

  

    Edgemont has produced a variety of successful people!  The latest to be recognized is Craig Bieber, EHS Class of 1962, who has become a published author.
    Bieber’s recently released book, Saylor’s Triangle, is available o­n Amazon.com.  The author will be visiting Edgemont o­n April 18th and will be having a book signing at the Edgemont Library o­n that day at 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
